Breightmet vs LAFC 1st

BREIGHTMET UNITED 2, LEIGH ATHLETIC 2 (4-2 Penalties)
Atherton Charity Cup, Quarter Final
Tuesday 29th August, 2017

Leigh Athletic crashed out of the Atherton Charity Cup 4-3 on penalties to lose a game that, at the break, they were never likely to lose. It was a point of the half time break coming at the wrong time as Leigh were cruising, two goals up and never under threat. But the interval saw them come out and completely under perform. They could have got themselves out of jail with a last gasp penalty, but they didn’t and they had to accept defeat to the lesser team.

But in all the mayhem of the last few minutes, some facts were forgotten.
Leigh should have been out of sight by the end of that first half. Some close calls from Kiel Brennan, Tom Sims, Dean Dearden and Keeran Parker should have seen Athletic score early and settle down. Some heroic goalkeeping too, kept the score level.

In the end to goals late in the half from Brennan and Dearden created that false sense of security.

Simply put, Leigh need to make sure that the chances that they create are turned into goals, then the lottery of a penalty shoot-out wouldn’t have been needed.

A good game, the officials all agreed the better team lost. That was no consolation on the night.
