LAFC 1st vs Tyldesley United

Pre-Season Friendly

Saturday 22nd July, 2017

The score-line doesn’t even begin to hint at it, but this was a game so dominated by Leigh Athletic that those watching could not believe only three goals were scored. True, the Tyldesley goalkeeper did product a string of fine saves, and their defence lead a charmed existence at times clearing three off the line, but for all their attacking prowess, Athletic struggled to make the breakthrough that would have seen them relax and settle into their rhythm.

Some of the struggle could be put down to the strike partnership of Adam Jones and Joshua Brennan who had never played together before, but whilst both were given good chances to open the scoring, the duo failed to convert the chances.

Free kicks from Kiel Brennan and Tom Sims came close as did headers from Daniel Babilinski and Ben Canny but it took just over half an hour for Jones to make up for those earlier misses and open the scoring. From that point on, it became a procession as Leigh took control of the game.

It wasn’t until ten minutes from the end that Tyldesley had their first meaningful attempt on goal, which was easily saved by substitute keeper, Craig Holmes.

By that time, Grady Mountford had stolen in at the far post on the hour to double the lead and end the game as a contest.

Joshua Brennan finally bagged his debut goal on eighty-five minutes when his shot squirmed under the goalkeeper bringing the scoring to an end.

This was a good solid performance though, operating at about 50% of their capabilities. Tougher games will follow but Athletic need to get into the habit of finishing teams off when they have such domination in a game.
