LEIGH FOUNDRY 0, LEIGH ATHLETIC 4
Atherton Charity Cup, Group C
Wednesday 19th July, 2017
Athletic began their assault on the Atherton Charity Cup with a performance that well worthy of such a convincing victory, and for the first time this season they didn’t need to go a goal behind before they began to play. True, for the first fifteen minutes or so it was end to end stuff, but slowly Athletic began to turn the screw and almost opened the scoring on twelve minutes when Rob Henrys strike was well saved by the Foundry keeper.
Indeed, during the first half, it was the keeper who stole the show, saving from Danny Eaton and palming Matthew Babilinski’s free kick round the post. The breakthrough came on the half hour as Eaton’s glorious cross eluded the keepers outstretched arm for Sean Mountford to steal in at the far post to open the scoring.
In the second half Leigh slowly began to turn the screw and Tom Scott was only a fraction late in following up a spilled ball by the keeper. Their persistence eventually paid dividends as Tom Sims through ball was struck home by Matthew Babilinski to give Athletic the comfort of a two goal cushion.
Tom Scott added a third, and Dave “Didzy” Hunt added a fourth from thirty yards that was an early contender for goal of the season.
The downside was serious injuries to Danny Eaton and Matthew Babilinski, whilst Thomas Babilinski also left the field of play due to injury. Eaton will be out until late August, at the earliest.
In the end the score line did justice to the state of the game, and the teams. The level has been set, it is now up to Leigh Athletic to maintain it.
